EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Pick Their Battles

Values Beliefs Traits Emotions Exceptional Leaders know they can't have everything exactly as they would like it. There are many competing constituencies with different agendas, needs and objectives within any organization. Each person believes he or she has the right solution from his/her point of view. Compromise, collaboration, taking a firm stand, and simply letting go and not choosing to fight can all be appropriate strategies in a given conflict, depending on the circumstances and the stakes involved.

Exceptional Leaders know that others must win at times in order to have the organization function effectively. And sometimes the energy and political capital expended may not be worth getting the exact outcome you want.

When they do pick a battle, Exceptional Leaders do so in light of all the circumstances and ramifications, knowing that theirs is the right path. They strategize to constructively and ethically get what they want.

? Thought Provoker

  • Do you get into conflict over minor issues?
  • Do you withdraw to avoid being in conflict?
  • Do you willingly compromise, knowing that others also need to win and that there is always more than one solution to a problem?
  • Do you get into conflicts on matters that are really none of your business?
  • When the battle is over, do you focus on the future and refrain from holding the outcome over others, or do you hold a grudge?

Exceptional Leaders know that having passion around one's agenda is positive. ‘Battles’ are a part of life and business and can lead to positive outcomes.
