EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Make Effective Requests

Values Beliefs Traits Emotions Exceptional Leaders know how to masterfully use language for the coordination of action. This includes making effective requests.

When we get upset that certain things have not been accomplished, we can find that we were never clear in our communications in the first place as to what we really wanted to happen and who was to do it.

Exceptional Leaders communicate the ‘conditions of satisfaction’ expected when making a request. They also communicate when they want the requested action taken. Most important, there is both clarity of intention and clarity of communication.

When you make requests, use the following to ensure you that you get what you want done with the quality you expect, when you want it.

CAN DO
Are they personally capable of doing what is requested? Are they competent to do it?
Does the system allow them to do it?
Do they have the resources to do it?
Does the timeframe requested recognize their priorities?
Will they be able to meet the conditions of satisfaction associated with the request?

WANT TO
Are they generally a motivated person?
Do they know the reason to do it?
Is there a payoff for them in doing it?
Is it within the scope of their responsibilities?
Do they feel respected?

WILL DO
Do they agree to do it? In other words, will they make a promise to do it?
Do they have the power to say no or to negotiate the conditions in agreeing to the request?

DO
Do they honor their commitment, or communicate the reason why they can’t in a timely manner?

Requests and promises make the world go 'round. Making them effectively is essential to being an Exceptional Leader.
