EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Know What Kind of Power To Use
Power is the capability to get others to do things. Exceptional Leaders recognize there are several types of power that they can use, depending on the circumstances.
In today's complex flatter and "matrixed" organizations, the traditional hierarchical power may not be sufficient for success.
Types of power include:
Hierarchical Power-this is the top down position power with the ability to reward and punish.
Personal Power-this is using the power of one's personality through communication and persuasion skills to get others to do things.
Charismatic Power-this is the power that comes from being an attractive and natural leader who others just simply want to follow.
Expert power-this is the power that comes from one's expertise, having the solutions and knowing what needs to be done.
Collaborative Power-this is the power that comes from the relationships with others as well as the willingness to add value to others efforts.
Relationship Power-this is the power that comes with knowing the "right" people and influencing them to assist in your agenda.
Emotional Power-this is the ability to impact the moods and emotions of those around you.
