EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Keep Their Promises
Exceptional Leaders know that keeping promises is an essential quality for themselves and their organization if they are going to maintain and build trust.
In a previous topic, we discussed making effective requests. When you agree to a request, it becomes a promise. For trust to exist, promises must be kept.
Exceptional Leaders keep their promises on the little things, such as being on time to meetings, as well as the big things. They know they set the tone for the entire organization. If they don't keep their promises to customers, to employees and to all other stakeholders; there will be tacit permission for others to not keep their promises.
Thought Provoker
- Do you communicate your promises clearly and cleanly so there is no misunderstanding?
- Are your promises slippery, e.g., "I will try to do it"?
- Are there any promises that you have made right now but not fulfilled?
- Do you show up for meetings on time?
- What system can you set up now that will ensure that your promises are kept?
- Are there requests that you have made that have not been acted upon or followed up on?
- Have you established a culture within your organization which supports the keeping of promises and calls others to account for failure to keep them?
