EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Have Bandwidth

Values Beliefs Traits Emotions One of the issues at Microsoft right now is that their employees can't get on their leaders' calendars. The leaders are so busy and spread thin with bureaucratic activities that they can't attend to employee's creativity or need for decisions. Some say that this lack of executive bandwidth has slowed the organization down and why Google and Apple beat them out in the search engine and digital music businesses.

Exceptional Leaders create the necessary time bandwidth so that they can manage their employees effectively. This may mean reducing the number of direct reports or re-designing how they do their work. It may mean relentlessly prioritizing and re-prioritizing, so that they are available to ensure that their employees are getting what they need to be creative and to move initiatives forward.

  • Are you just too busy to see everyone that really needs your support as a leader?
  • Can the right people easily get on your calendar? Perhaps the wrong people get on it too easily and take up your time with unimportant things.
  • Does your calendar reflect your priorities? Are you engaged in the short term focused endeavors or on the longer term, bigger payoff endeavors?
  • Do you find yourself attending unimportant meetings?
  • Do you make the time to inspire and lead others to creatively focus on the future?

A leader’s time is extremely valuable. Exceptional Leaders use theirs wisely.
