EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Demonstrate They Care
One of the primary reasons employees quit or don't perform is that they perceive that their leaders don't care about them.
Some managers are so focused on task that they view employees simply as instruments to get things done. They don’t see others as people. They are not perceived as caring.
When leaders are perceived as not caring, employees feel used rather than led. Research shows that employees quit their boss rather than the company.
With today's critical shortage of talent, Exceptional Leaders know that a key part of their job is to see others as more than simply instruments to get things done. They see the whole person, not just their role or function.
Thought Provoker
- Do you look for opportunities to show that you care, such as when employees are faced with a personal crisis?
- Do you take steps to insure that workload is distributed fairly and that top performers are not overloaded and overwhelmed?
- Do you really check in with how others are doing, really doing, rather than just saying "how are you"?
- Can you connect with your employees’ personal lives at some level, so that they know you see them as fellow human beings?
- When was the last time you connected with a fellow employee—really connected at the heart level?
