EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Challenge the Status Quo
If you don't challenge the status quo, the external world will. With today's level of accelerating change, it is essential that organizations and their leaders respond appropriately to changing conditions in their market, in their industry, and in the culture.
Who would have predicted three years ago that a survey of CEOs in 2004 would have government compliance as one of the top concerns—particularly with a Republican administration in office.
Leaders must constantly scan their organization and their management to find opportunities to change to meet external demands, rather than being stuck in the status quo through the natural inertia to which we all succumb from time to time.
Thought Provoker
- Look for people and systems that have been doing things the same way for three years or more. Challenge whether it is the best way now. Where could it be improved?
- Do you have a systematic way of keeping up with current industry trends?
- Can your competition make a significant change that will impact your business?
- Do you anticipate coming changes in the culture and how they will impact your organization? An example is the pending retirement of the boomers and emergence of Generation Y (born 1980-2000).
- Are your technical systems allowing you to maintain your competitive edge?
- Do you know where you are on the product life cycle, and how to keep up?
