EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Are Resilient

Values Beliefs Traits Emotions Exceptional Leaders don't let past negative outcomes, upsets and setbacks impact their effectiveness in the present. They are resilient and press on to be successful in the present regardless of the past.

The Olympics offers a number of examples of this. Gymnast Paul Hamm stumbled and fell on the vault, yet minutes later he was able to perform in three events so outstandingly that he overcame the low score to get the gold medal. His mental toughness and confidence in his ability did not let the past impact his current performance, and he was able save the day.

However in the Olympic tennis final, American Mardy Fish let what he felt was an unjust umpire call upset him to the extent that his mental condition affected his game and he lost the gold medal to Nicholas Massou.

All leaders have business, professional and personal setbacks in their lives. It is a part of life. Exceptional Leaders are able to overcome past upsets and perform effectively in the present.

  • How have you handled upsets and setbacks in the past?
  • What have you learned from them?
  • Do you avoid letting past negative outcomes affect your self confidence?
  • What ways have you developed to ‘shake it off’ and focus on your success?

Exceptional Leaders don’t let things get them down—at least not for long.
