EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Are Candid

Values Beliefs Traits Emotions How many times do you fail to initiate crucial conversations in order to avoid the anticipated reactions of others? Exceptional Leaders not only see the elephant in the room—they talk about it.

In his recent book Winning, Jack Welsh advocates that leaders be “candid”. Hidden agendas, unspoken truths or assessments, and avoided confrontations can rob an organization of the dialog necessary for it to be successful. Only when leaders engage in rigorous conversations can the needed issues be surfaced and addressed.

Exceptional Leaders know that it is possible to be candid and yet constructive; to be candid and yet recognize the impact on others feelings; to be candid and still have others like and respect them.

  • Can you constructively be candid with those around you?
  • What conversations are you avoiding?
  • Who are you avoiding?
  • What would be the benefits for you and your organization if everyone talked about the crucial things needed to be successful—even though such conversations may be painful?
  • What conversation can you have today that will put things on the table so that they can be addressed?

Exceptional Leaders communicate fully, even when the truth hurts.
