EXCEPTIONAL LEADERS...
Exhibit Self Control

Values Beliefs Traits EmotionsLeaders with emotional self-control find ways to manage disturbing emotions and impulses, and even to channel them in useful ways.  Exceptional leaders stay calm and clear-headed under high stress or during a crisis.

Some leaders can exhibit high stressful unproductive behavior and be unable to contain themselves; acting out like a two year old with tantrums. This can have devastating effect on everyone around them.

Others can exhibit this stress behavior by impatience and irritability, interrupting others, not listening, putting others down and making them wrong.

It is fine to be passionate and impatient for results. Being demanding is part of effective leadership. Displaying anger and frustration is ok at times, providing that it is held in check and results in behavior that is productive rather than unproductive.

? Thought Provoker

  • To what degree are you aware of your emotions?
  • Do you display anger appropriately?
  • Do you know what triggers your stress reactions?
  • Can you observe yourself and see how your behavior impacts others?
  • Are you able to catch yourself when the internal pressure builds and shift your emotions so that your behavior remains productive?
  • Do you have confidants who can observe you and give you feedback when they see things getting out of hand?

Exceptional leaders are able to control their impulses under stress and behave in productive and effective ways rather than ineffectual ways.
